Sourdough Basics
Next Class: May 18th, 2024
A request for more! Making sourdough bread at home has been a big hit overall with family & friends and the request from others to have another basics sourdough class.
George and I are both passionate about food, cooking, and baking.
We have a new vision for our homestead which encompasses us learning and teaching some of the old traditional homesteading ways and culture at our farm. It has been inspiring to have skills that help our family to become more sustainable and we hope we can help others as well.
Vegetable Garden
Can you believe it is going to be 80 degrees for Mother’s Day weekend!?
I think... (sigh) I have everything I can plant, planted in our garden. This year I am trying several different ways of planting potatoes (golden potatoes). Planted potatoes in the raised bed (maybe not a good idea but they are thriving), (2) fabric bags, and (3) potato towers which are made of a wire hog fence. Fall is going to be a great harvest!
Honey & Mason Bees
George & I have returned to beekeeping this year. We have Carniolan honey bees which are native to Slovenia & Southern Austria. Our single hive is thriving this spring.
Mason bees which are native to the PNW has been something we have additionally added to our homestead. They do not live in a colony and do not produce honey. Mason bees are one of the first pollinators and will lay approximately 4-6 eggs a year to hatch out the following year.
California Rabbits
Our doe rabbit will be bred again on
May 25th, 2024.
Doe & Buck were born in 2022. We have bred our doe 4 times before this upcoming breeding. She recently had a stillborn litter of 4 kits, possibly due to the gap in her breeding schedule.
Californian rabbit is a large and docile American rabbit breed that is well-loved as livestock and pets because of its soft fur, calm temperament, distinct markings, and size. Bred by George West which cross bred New Zealand rabbits with chinchilla and himalyan rabbits to obtain this beautiful breed.
Fowl: Chickens &
Corturnix Quail
We currently have 27 chickens (mostly Black Copper Marans) and 12 corturnix quail birds.
Our quail will be 8 weeks old the first week of June and should start laying eggs. Our chickens are currently laying approximately one dozen eggs per day which we are selling locally from our farm. If you are ever interested in buying eggs from us please click on our link for eggs on the website.
Vermicomposting
Did you know that there is a worm farm in Poulsbo? We did not either until we went looking to buy worms to start our worm ranch. In January of this year, we purchased approximately 2,000 worms. Worms double in population about every 2 months under ideal conditions.
That puts us with approximately 8,000 worms currently! Our vision is to get to over 200,000 worms and then begin the transition of selling our worms, worm castings, and worm tea for other gardeners and local fishermen to enjoy.
“Thank you”
for supporting us and other local farmers!
